We arrived at 8:00 am at the KKEV Cambodia Children’s Village and had an amazing, activity-filled day 😊
1.) Introduction at the KKEV Village
Mr. Phearak warmly welcomed us at the gate of the KKEV organization. After a brief registration, we were guided through the center straight to the soccer field. Immediately after our arrival, the football competition between the girls' teams began.
2.) Football Competition
Emelie joined as a surprise member of the girls’ soccer team. The girls played with lots of enthusiasm and joy for 30 minutes, motivated to win. Team B won the competition, earning lots of applause from the audience. The awards, in the form of small gifts, were presented right afterward. Following the girls' match, the boys' teams—the Red Lions and the Black Lions—started their competition. Laurenz actively participated as a member of the Red Lions. It was a pleasure to see the older boys caring for the younger ones while eagerly competing for the ball. Both teams were enthusiastically supported by the audience, creating an atmosphere full of fun and happiness.
3.) Low-Speed Bicycle Competition & Relay Running Competition
After successfully completing the soccer matches, the tournament continued with a low-speed bicycle competition. Participants were asked to race at a snail’s pace, showcasing their skills in riding as slowly as possible. The audience joyfully encouraged the riders, and it was amusing to watch the children put so much effort into riding slowly instead of quickly. During the breaks, Mr. Phearak and the Head of Administration explained a lot about KKEV’s history, its current challenges, and its objectives. Additionally, we learned about the difficult circumstances that poor families in Cambodia face today and how children become part of KKEV. Without passing judgment on the parties involved, it was heartbreaking for us to hear such stories.
4.) Swimming Competition
The swimming competition took place in the nearby pond, where the best swimmers tried to be the fastest without diving. It was heartwarming to see how much fun the kids had during their performance and afterward.
5.) Tour of the Premises
Last but not least, Mr. Phearak graciously took the time to show us the eight children’s houses, the cooking area, the old school bus, the planting patches, the fish ponds, the front yard where the children and staff gather for lunch, and the scheduled afternoon event. Finally, we also learned about the organizational structure of KKEV.
